2012 CQ World Wide DX SSB

The big buzz in the Five Cities is the 'event' of the RadioSport season and 2012 CQ World Wide DX SSB is fast approaching. I'm looking forward to chasing and logging DX stations through day light hours then taking the evening as a break. This is my first foray into the wireless world of single sideband operation and I'm jazzed about the idea of connecting with other operators using this medium of communications.

My goal is have a lot of ham radio fun, log as many countries as possible on three bands (10, 15, and 20m), and log as many CQ zones as possible on the same three bands.

On the other hand, I'd like to keep in mind those who are going to great lengths from DXpeditioneers to local field day like operations to those low power, low profile stations using wire antenna systems in less than theoretical conditions.

The thrill is not gone instead through the weekend give consideration to those who pioneered wireless technology. I'd recommend taking a moment and consider computer driven logging, the capability of using a tri-band antenna on three bands simultaneously, the game changing spotting networks, or that voice memory keyer.

I'm looking forward to RadioSport's big event this weekend.

Contest on.

2012 Pacificon | #hamr New Media Movement

#hamr New Media Movement AF6PU, WB6NOA, N7ICE & K7AGE
Forum was well attended as Jim Siemons, AF6PU moderated the discussion centered on ham radio and our relationship with the on-going social media movement. Whether one agrees it is positive or it is negative, communication channels like 73s, Ham Radio Nation, K7AGE Amateur Radio Videos, and KD0BIK's Podcast, are extending the reach of amateur wireless communications.

Additionally, Jerry Taylor, KD0BIK joined the discussion via Skype and spoke about why he was inspired to produce his own podcast.

I enjoyed the evening listening to the round table discussion as Jim, AF6PU kept us laughing while probing the deeper question about the future of the hobby and the impact of social media.

2012 Pacificon | Connecting With Paul Ewing, N6PSE

Paul Ewing, N6PSE
Briefly spoke with Paul, N6PSE on two occasions in between his DXpedition forum commitments such as 7O6T, Yemen and 3D2C, Conway Reef.

DXpeditions are adapting to the new challenges of swarm management and the competitive extremes inherent to the challenge. Likewise, one might not be aware of hardware and communications issues that an operation must solve on the fly. One example was uploading 3D2C logs via satellite link and the slow to clunky data rates not to mention thermal issues with one transceiver.

Please keep in mind when the next major DXpedition is deployed that often times there is more than likely an issue that the swarm may not be aware of.

The key to overall success for the one in need of a new entity is patience and listening to DXpedition logging patterns. I like to remember that I'm not living in a perfect world, that ham radio is a hobby, and chasing DX is supposed to be fun.
