This Weekend In RadioSport | 2009 ARRL Sweepstakes v.CW
Sweepstakes is fun. I can compete against a set of goals. This year I want to concentrate on improving my operating skills. It is well within my reach and easily quantifiable. Results either at the kilowatt or low power level are measurable and difficult, achievable goals in the short-to-medium time frame keeps me in the game.
My goal(s) are:
- Have a lot of ham radio fun this weekend.
- Reduce my UBN error rate by 2-percent.
- Concentrate on the exchange.
- Best my 109 Q count from last year.
- Defeat my overall score from last year.
- Operate the first 12-hours of the event.
My operating strategy includes using the advantage of my antenna system on the low bands when calling CQ and search/pounce on the higher bands. Let's face it, going signal-to-signal on 20m during the opening hours of the event, well, my logs suggest another tactic. Perhaps, with our sunspot count, 15m will produce plenty of activity from coast-to-coast this weekend.
I need to eat supper and continue making preparations for Sweepstakes. Best results to everyone. Good luck. Kick butt!
Pour on the CQ.
SFI = 71 | A-index = 0 | K-index = 0 | Sunspot count = 15 @ 0006UTC.

Great goals, Scot. I have that same problem with S and H. KB this weekend! - Gordon
Gordon--
Excellent work home crafting your beam antenna from wire from an article in QST magazine. I'm looking forward to reading your analysis of its performance through Sweepstakes weekend.

I wish more Hams had your attitude. I am taking a break operating at KP2M this weekend and just want to commend all the operators giving CW SS a try. We are trying for a top ten score from VI and need every small signal we can find to get our score up! There are only a few big guns, and every Q counts! Thanks for getting on! N3XF
Thank you for your compliment and your encouragement means a lot here in the shackadelic on the beach. Ham radio, especially RadioSport, is a great teacher and I like competing either against personal goals or as a team member. It is the pursuit of a quality signal that drives my motivation and positive attitude.
On the other hand, Murphy handed my butt on a platter this weekend with an RFI problem into the television set. It is important to me that my station is interference clean and I troubleshoot the problem for a few hours.
I'll follow up my storyline later this week. I achieved some but not all of my goals.
My best to Team KP2M and I heard your signal on 15m in the afternoon. I called a few times without any luck from propagation.
