Transceivers For Less Than $1000.00

I'm in the research stage looking for a transceiver with a small footprint. Elecraft, Yaesu, Kenwood, and Icom manufacture transceivers ranging between $500 and $1000. I'm satisfied with product choice across four manufacturers and their budget friendly offering as well. RadioSport is my outlet for ham radio fun and given my location, a well-built receiver, is utmost on my criteria list. Additionally, the pricing of each respective transceiver is not a barrier into ham radio as well. One can save a few dollars through the year and quickly achieve their goal. I'm having fun with my Yaesu FT100 and will soon add a computer interface cable. I'm looking forward to moving to the next level. In contrast a FLEX-5000A or FLEX-5000C software defined radio (SDR) is out of my reach. Perhaps in the future FlexRadio Systems will manufacture an SDR for under $1000? In the meantime, I'm looking at transceivers that are budget friendly with exceptional receivers. More to follow as my research continues. Contest on.
